Photographer Jill Jasuta:

“A timeless Chesapeake scene…. Two men, a dog, and an ice boat on the frozen water in Claiborne, Md. Ice boaters were thrilled with our bitterly cold temps – it meant a rare opportunity to get their specialized vessels out for some super-fast gliding over frozen water.

“With their blades, these boats were reaching speeds up to 50 mph! It was very cool to see. Ice boating has been a tradition for more than a century. Probably the last real big time for ice boating was during the historic freeze of 1977, when the International Gold Cup Iceboat Races were held right in this area.”

Jill posted a  few more ice boating photos in February 2026 at Jill Jasuta Photography on Facebook and on Instagram. Shop for prints of Jill’s photos on the Secrets website. We don’t have this one up there. If you’re interested, send an email to SecretsoftheEasternShore@gmail.com and we’ll see …
