The new Secrets of the Eastern Shore book, 181 Great Events on Delmarva, celebrates the annual celebrations of the Delmarva Peninsula. Most chapters are devoted to a single event. Some, like this one, combine two similar events that happen around the same time into one section. Publication date: April 2020.

NUTSHELL: Indulge your sweet tooth during a pre-spring jaunt to one or both of two towns that are renowned for offering visitors an abundance of visitor-friendly diversions.
Winter always seems to linger too long, doesn’t it? These two events will let you fill the late-season void with sweet indulgences. The older of the pair is in Rehoboth Beach, where the festivities date to the town’s centennial in 1990. Almost always a sellout, the one-day event happens indoors at the Atlantic Sands Conference Center, so you’ll be sheltered from any late winter elements that arise, yet within a stone’s throw of beach, boardwalk, and downtown streets if Mother Nature delivers an early taste of spring instead. You’ll get to sample chocolate creations by local restaurants, professional bakers, and amateurs alike. A celebrity chef or two will likely be in attendance, signing books and doing cooking demos.
The younger St. Michaels event on Maryland’s Eastern Shore dates to 2019. Restaurants throughout town serve up chocolate-inspired specials over two days while hotels and B&Bs offer festival packages that might include extravagances on the order of “chocolate” spa treatments. The most popular item on the schedule is a Saturday Chocolate Crawl, which runs from late morning to late afternoon and involves wandering through the downtown from tasting station to tasting station, gobbling up sweet samples while sipping on local wines, beers, and spirits.
You’re going to need to walk off that chocolate at some point. In Rehoboth, that will be a simple matter of finding your way to the oceanfront boardwalk. From downtown St. Michaels, go west on Talbot Street to find the St. Michaels Nature Trail, which runs for 1.3 miles along the path of an old railroad line, crossing little San Domingo Creek—believe it or not, this spit of water used to be big enough to house shipbuilding operations—and going under a pretty covered bridge. You’ll pass a horse farm and an old cemetery before the trail ends south of town.
